E-books are a fantastic way to disseminate information. In short, there are still plenty of ideas that will sell well and have little competition when selling digital products.  So to answer the question, can you still profit from selling e-books on eBay?  I believe the answer is a resounding yes.

Are you offering tips on a niche topic in hopes that your prospects will contact you to learn even more? Are you looking for a more interesting way of sharing your story or trying to establish your profile in the business community? Or maybe you’re looking to create awareness for your brand/product in a way that is helpful to your audience rather than promotional. Knowing your objective will help you set the tone for your eBook.

  • KISS. Keep it short and simple. No one wants to read your 300-page eBook, and keep this in mind as you decide on a topic. Identify specific topics that will limit the scope of your writing. Fifteen to thirty pages should be more than enough for most eBooks. Remember, you aren’t writing a sales manual or company promotional material; instead, you are writing to capture and engage readers. With that in mind, don’t write in over-complicated language when things can be explained simply.

  • Name your eBook. Done in tandem with identifying your goals and settling on a topic, choosing a title will give your eBook some structure. You won’t be inclined to digress too much from the concept of your eBook if you’ve already figured out a compelling title. And don’t be afraid of subtitles, especially if this is a business eBook. Subtitles increase your SEO rankings and more accurately describe what the reader is interested in.

  • Write quality content. Yes, eBooks are downloaded for free (or in exchange for your reader’s email address), but people are coming to your site for a reason. Give them good-quality writing and show them that you are the expert that they think you are.

  • Hire an editor. Although an eBook may not seem like an official document, you want to be sure that it is edited thoroughly. A professional editor can check for consistency of tone, grammatical errors, and anything else that might make your reader dwell more on the writing than the content.

  • Design. eBook design is just as important as eBook copy. Sometimes it is even more important. A text-heavy, badly designed eBook will turn off your online readers, who have gotten used to stimulating, interactive online content. In part 1 on eBook writing, “Lead Generation Through Writing eBooks” we discussed what lead generation is, how important it is to Internet marketing, and how eBooks are an effective tool in helping the marketer to obtain a list of leads that can be used for additional promotions. In this section, we will discuss how to write eBooks that sell.

You want to be permanently, independently wealthy and you want to have a trustworthy reputation with your customers. You also want to communicate that your products and services improve the world in which we live. You want all of these things but at the same time, you don’t want to spend a large amount of time making them happen. You want your eBook to be read by millions of people without making too much of an investment of time or money.

Which stage are you at now with the eBook?

You have several possible concepts upon you might like to base the eBook. You need to figure out which concept is the most important to you now and for the next year. Once you have decided on that concept, you can enhance it with other concepts that you know will work with it. You may be further along with your eBook than just a concept. A sound bite will help to grab the attention of the audience as well.
     
  • Write a strong introduction. The introduction should include and identification of the problems that your target audience has, why you wrote the eBook, and the book’s purpose. Within the first couple of paragraphs, more specific benefits should be mentioned. You should also describe the format in which you will present the information in your eBook. The introduction should be under a page in length. Your introduction will help you write your sales letter.
     
  • Before you write the entire eBook, you should write an introductory sales letter. Keep your potential buyer in mind. To what would he be resistant? What problems or challenges does he generally face? Make sure that these are clearly addressed. Your letter, which will state that you will either promote your book by email or on your Web site, must include the benefits that your potential buyers want and need to read. Your letter must include compelling content, features, testimonials, and a biographical sketch about you, the author. If your potential buyer likes what they are reading, they will buy the eBook right there and then.
     
  • Write a table of contents. Each chapter needs a catchy title. If your reader doesn’t understand the chapter title, annotate it. Add some benefits and/or a subtitle.
     
  • Once you have requested and received feedback from preliminary material in your eBook from people whom you trust, ask for a testimonial. These testimonials will help you to promote your eBook online.

You need to make sure to design every part of your eBook to be a sales tool, one that brings out your best writing, writing that is compelling, easy to read, organized, and enjoyable. When you design your eBook correctly, it can sell thousands or even hundreds of thousands of copies. The sky’s the limit!
